CREATING SUSTAINABILITY. INTERVIEW WITH TATANO

Easy Engineering: How do you view sustainability and what are your efforts in this direction?

TATANO: Tatano’s development strategy is supported by the constant integration of sustainability. Satisfying the needs of the present generation without compromising those of the future generation is the concept behind our Sustainability strategy with the aim of reaching ambitious goals: Becoming three times more efficient before 2040, therefore, triple the value we create compared to footprint generated by our activities.

To achieve our goal, we will improve our efficiency by 5-6% every year.

Our areas of intervention are divided into two aspects: “more value” and “reduced footprint”.

We aim to create sustainable value in all our work, side by side with our employees, partners and stakeholders. We take responsibility for the safety and health of our employees, customers and consumers, as well as for the protection of the environment and the quality of life in the communities in which we operate.

We are committed to reducing the resources used and the footprint generated by our activities and the use of our products, to create thriving, healthy and varied communities.

The final result desired by Tatano for this twenty-year milestone: the creation of energy that is not only renewable, but also and above all sustainable.

E.E: Tell us about the sustainable solutions you offer (if any).

TATANO: Our boilers are designed for different types of biomass such as pellets, wood chips, olive husks, chopped shells and wood, energies spread all over the world, which make us independent from the strong fluctuations in fossil fuel prices, allowing us to save on energy costs, to strengthen the local economy and to respect the environment. Designing a boiler compatible with different types of fuels, obtaining more with fewer resources, improving the quality of life of people and the environment was the great challenge of Tatano, but, to date, we boast in our range of products, boilers in able to use up to 10 different biomasses.

Another Tatano sustainable product solution favored by our market is the KalorBox (Smart Mobile Energy): our “custom made” mobile heating systems (plug & play), complete solutions and supplied by a single supplier.

E.E: Do you offer solutions to reinvigorate old equipment with new solutions?

TATANO: Preventively avoiding negative effects on the environment is the top priority in the development of our innovative and long-lasting products. We pay attention to the limited energy consumption and reduced emissions during use and environmentally friendly disposal at the end of the product’s life cycle (80% of the finished product is remelted to obtain new steel plates).

Designing and manufacturing flexible and open systems from the outset that allow even years later, the integration of new more efficient components and accessories: replacement of old electrical and electronic components with more performing ones, integration of filters for dust suppression and of new combustion control systems (Lambda Control) to reduce emissions, possibility of upgrading the old boards, as well as their replacement with latest generation control software that allow access to remote management and assistance, but also the possibility of interconnection to today’s home automation systems.

E.E: Tell us about sustainability in production and distribution.

TATANO: All our boilers undergo a production process with energy-efficient CNC machinery powered by a photovoltaic park, therefore the use of electricity from renewable sources has had a 50% reduction in the use of fossils. In addition, the cooking processes are carried out through furnaces powered by pellets or bioenergy from zero km. This process application has lowered the use of fossil energy by 15%.

The distribution chain and sustainable transport, a fundamental component in business operations Tatano aims to maximize the efficiency of road transport and reduce delivery distances through our three logistics centers of strategic distribution Cammarata (AG), Piacenza (PC) and Bucharest (ROMANIA), with scheduled supplies. For individual shipments we use suppliers with low-pollution fleets. Despite this, we are aware that we cannot completely reduce our footprint and for this reason the Tatano Green Project was born, an environmental reforestation project aimed at absorbing our environmental footprint.

E.E: Tell us about R&D and innovation.

TATANO: There is an internal sector within Tatano aimed precisely at innovation, research and development. The result of this reality is our latest BLU EVO product.

Gasification boiler with efficiencies around 95%, with energy efficiency class A ++ thus respecting all eco-design criteria. Furthermore, the product has been classified according to Ministerial Decree 186/2017 in 5 environmental stars due to its low impact: CO below 10 mg / Nm3 and the reduced level of dust below 5 Mg / Nm3.

The extraordinary combustion method has allowed Tatano to even obtain a patent for industrial innovation.

A result that testifies to the commitment to improving the product in terms of performance and the environment.

E.E: How do you promote this clean culture in your company?

TATANO: Tatano has invested heavily in implementing international certifications such as ISO 9001: 2015 and ISO 14001: 2015 at every stage of the company. A new project “the Sustainability Ambassadors” has been launched in our offices, a Tatano team that focuses on guiding processes aimed at increasing the awareness of sustainability as a practice for all our collaborators, providing training on environmental issues through on-site events.

We have activated collaborations with leading international associations such as GBC – Green Building Council Italy for sustainable buildings. A Tatano energy network is active to cooperate with a network of professionals who are experts in environmental issues. Technical-scientific partnerships with important university centers are also active.

E.E: Tell us about conserving resources and promoting circularity.

TATANO: Circular processes are implemented systematically through technological and business innovation.

A business model based on circularity implies the utmost collaboration between all the players, which is why we consider it essential to open up to dialogue with those who share this vision. The application of the principles of the circular economy links different supply chains in a process of industrial symbiosis. The waste of a company, or a sector, becomes a raw material for another. This is a decisive approach to tackle the climate crisis and at the same time increases competitiveness. But, above all, it generates commercial and economic opportunities as well as environmental and social benefits.

E.E: How do you guide attention on the sustainability of operations?

TATANO: We ensure the implementation of our environmental policy through an environmental management system certified according to the international standard ISO 14001: 2015.

We prefer suppliers who are aware of their environmental responsibility; Appropriate selection processes ensure that our most important suppliers are able to comply with the principles of our company policy.

We employ independent auditors who verify compliance with our Corporate Standards through regular on-site inspections.

E.E: Tell us about the sustainable energy solutions used.

TATANO: We produce 15 kWatt to 3 MWatt thermal air or water boilers (up to 15 MWatt as cascade solutions) that use sustainable biomass to develop heat intended for heating civil environments and production units both on a small and large scale.

Wood from the forest, cores from non-food crops, sawdust from industrial production waste, minced shells from the agro-food industry are the sustainable energies that we have always promoted.

Concrete applications on www.tatano.com testify economic and environmental benefits.

E.E: How do you see sustainability in the future?

TATANO: Greater use of renewable energy, this is the direction that Tatano has supported for a sustainable future. Energy sustainability is the driving force behind change and relying on renewable sources means using the energy of the future. Saving the planet’s resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions may be the way to extend the life of ecosystems to ensure a livable future for the next generations. In addition, we think that using biomasses at zero km can be a way of protecting our territory and encouraging local entrepreneurial developments. This is a policy that we have always pushed from the origins of the company and that we want to continue to do.
