Interview with Massimiliano Sfragara, Product Management Director at Enex Technologies
A brief description of the company and its activities.
Massimiliano Sfragara: Enex Technologies is a European Climate Tech company specializing in high-efficiency HVAC&R solutions based exclusively on natural refrigerants — CO₂ (R744), propane (R290), ammonia (R717) and water (R718).
Headquartered in Italy and operating across several production sites in Europe, Enex Technologies designs and manufactures refrigeration systems, heat pumps, chillers and ventilation units for commercial, industrial and comfort applications.
Our mission is to accelerate the global transition toward sustainable heating and cooling, eliminating synthetic refrigerants and drastically reducing energy consumption and emissions.
What are the main areas of activity of the company?
M.S: We operate in four main segments:
- HVAC (Comfort and Commercial Cooling): Propane and CO2-based heat pumps and chillers for commercial buildings and industrial facilities
- Industrial Refrigeration: Ammonia and CO₂ systems for food processing, refrigerated warehouses and industrial applications.
- Commercial Refrigeration: CO₂ systems for food retail stores of all formats, from convenience stores to supermarkets and hypermarkets.
- Ventilated Units: CO2, NH3 and brine air coolers for cold storage and blast freezing; CO2 gas coolers and NH3 condensers for commercial & industrial refrigeration; dry and adiabatic coolers for process cooling; computer room air handlers and dry coolers for data centres
This portfolio allows us to address the complete temperature control chain — from food to comfort, from data centers to district heating — using only natural refrigerants.
What’s new about your latest products and services?
M.S: Our product roadmap is exceptionally dynamic. Enex Technologies has committed to launching one new natural refrigerant product per month — a goal that drives cross-functional collaboration between R&D, engineering, marketing and manufacturing.
Each launch responds to a clear market need, providing measurable environmental impact and a strong commercial opportunity.
Recent examples include the Everest Trio R290 chiller/heat pump and a new compact edition of our CO2 heritage “hero product” Senna series, the Senna Xtra Smart for commercial applications.
By the end of this year, we will also introduce a low-charge ammonia industrial chiller and an industrial V-shape dry cooler, reinforcing our leadership in natural refrigerants across all sectors.
At Enex Technologies, thanks to 400 years of combined expertise of our acquired companies, we can navigate all opportunities given by the natural refrigerants current revamp. We have the very best natural refrigerant solution for every customer need.
What are your main product and service ranges?
M.S: Our portfolio is organized into four natural refrigerant technology families, each represented by a dedicated brand within the Enex Technologies family:
- CO₂ Systems (Enex): Transcritical and subcritical racks , for commercial refrigeration and industrial processes, combining compact design and high efficiency for food retail, logistics, and cold chain applications. Transcritical chillers and heat pumps for space heating and cooling and domestic hot water.
- Ammonia Systems (Enex Industrial): High-efficiency, low-charge NH₃ chillers and heat pumps for large industrial applications, district heating, and process cooling — designed for maximum safety, energy performance, and sustainability.
- Propane Systems (Emicon): packages and Modular R290 chillers and heat pumps for HVAC and process cooling, engineered for commercial and tertiary markets seeking sustainable comfort and energy savings.
- Water-Based Systems (Roen Est): dry and adiabatic coolers and computer room air handlers for data centers, offering high thermal efficiency with minimal water and energy consumption.
All these brands share a common philosophy — “One Enex” — uniting design excellence, digital innovation, and environmental responsibility. Together, they deliver a complete suite of HVAC&R solutions using only natural refrigerants, enabling our customers to decarbonize their operations with proven “Made in EU” technology.

What is the state of the market where you are currently active?
M.S: The European market for sustainable cooling and heating solutions is growing rapidly due to both regulatory pressure and rising energy costs. The F-Gas Regulation revision and global restrictions on HFCs are accelerating the shift to natural refrigerants.
At the same time, industrial decarbonization — especially in food, beverage, logistics, and data centers — is driving demand for high-performance, low-GWP systems.
While our core market remains Europe, we are seeing increased traction in Australia, Middle East and South America, where the energy transition is opening new opportunities for our technologies.
What can you tell us about market trends?
M.S: We observe four dominant trends shaping our Innovation strategy:
- Scaling Up: Increasing demand for large-capacity CO₂ systems above 1MW for industrial and district heating applications.
- Integration: Growing interest in combined heating, cooling and air conditioning systems — single integrated platforms using natural refrigerants throughout.
- Efficiency and Water Management: Demand for adiabatic and hybrid solutions with reduced water consumption and optimized energy performance.
- Digitalization: Predictive control, remote monitoring and data-driven maintenance to enhance uptime and lifecycle efficiency.
Natural refrigerants are no longer a niche — they are the mainstream of sustainable cooling. Our goal is to make them scalable, affordable and replicable across markets.
What are the most innovative products or services you are marketing?
M.S: We are the First and unique One-stop Climate Tech Company manufacturing natural refrigerant-based cooling, heating, ventilation, and refrigeration climate solution. Innovation for us means modularity, low charge, and high integration.
Our most innovative lines include:
- modular R290 4-pipe units designed for plug-and-play installation and easy scalability.
- CO2 transcritical boosters with parallel compression and ejectors to maximize efficiency even in hot climates, including integrated space heating and cooling functions.
- Low-charge ammonia systems such as chillers and NH3/CO2 cascade minimizing refrigerant volume while maximizing efficiency.
Beyond hardware, our digital ecosystem connects Enex equipment to the cloud for continuous performance optimization and predictive diagnostics, extending system lifespan and customer value
What are your expectations for the end of 2025?
M.S: We expect to close 2025 with high single digit growth across all business segments, supported by continuous product innovation and market expansion.
Our focus remains on profitable, sustainable growth — scaling the impact of natural refrigerants while maintaining excellence in quality, safety, and customer experience.
Enex Technologies will continue to prove that European innovation can lead the global decarbonization of cooling and heating, one product and one customer at a time.
