HEMPWOOD, WHERE SUSTAINABILITY MEETS BUILDING MATERIALS

HempWood, made by Fibonacci LLC, headquartered in Murray, Kentucky, USA, is positioned as a sustainable, carbon-negative alternative to traditional lumber and hardwood flooring. It’s engineered from industrial hemp stalks combined with plant-based adhesives and is designed mainly for interior applications like flooring, panels, furniture, cabinetry, and interior millwork.

Interview with Tom Mathys, EU Sales Director at HempWood.

What are the main areas of activity of the company?

Tom Mathys: HempWood® operates in the sustainable building materials, bio-based, and green building manufacturing sectors. We specialize in the production of eco-friendly construction of flooring, panels, walls, and furniture. Based in the United States, HempWood® has developed markets across the world, shipping direct to customers and wholesalers alike.

What’s the news about new products/services?

T.M: Just this year, HempWood® has developed a line of more affordable organic flooring options designed solely for residential homes. HempWood® 12mm Organic Flooring continues to uphold our mission of sustainable and nontoxic alternative hardwoods with the price point the modern-day homeowner can afford.

What are the ranges of products/services?

T.M: HempWood® can be turned into carbon-negative, VOC-free flooring, paneling, cabinets, tabletops, and more. HempWood® Organic Flooring is non-toxic, high-performance, and durable enough for homes and public spaces alike. Our panels and lumber products provide quality eco-friendly alternatives to traditional wood.

What is the state of the market where you are currently active?

T.M: HempWood® sits in a specialty sustainability segment of the construction materials market — eco-focused architects, green buildings, healthy interiors, and premium renovations. The construction and decoration market worldwide are adopting ever more eco-friendly building materials. In Europe, the Green Deal’s objective is to have carbon-neutrality in the building materials by 2050. There is also an EU regulation coming into force in July 2026 forcing manufacturers to reduce the amount of formaldehyde in consumer products. HempWood® meets both criteria perfectly since it is carbon-negative and does not contain any added formaldehyde.

What can you tell us about market trends?

T.M: The global hemp-based building products market is projected to expand significantly, with estimates suggesting it could reach around EUR 80 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of ~11 % from 2025 to 2033. This includes hemp insulation, hempcrete, fiberboards and composites — categories where HempWood® fits alongside related materials (source: grandviewresearch.com). Demand is driven by sustainability goals, carbon-reduction

mandates, and green building certifications that favour low-embodied-carbon materials. Europe and North America are leading adoption, supported by strong sustainability policies and certification frameworks. Asia-Pacific and other regions are emerging markets with growing interest in eco-materials.

Tom Mathys, EU Sales Director at HempWood.

What are the most innovative products/services marketed?

T.M: HempWood® Natural Flooring – our flagship engineered flooring product made from compressed hemp fibers and a plant-based adhesive, serving as a carbon-negative and zero-VOC alternative to traditional wood flooring. It’s durable and harder than oak, suitable for both residential and commercial spaces.

HempWood® panels – we offer both solid and engineered furniture panels made from HempWood®. The engineered, more light-weight panels are ideal as decorative wall panels, cabinetry, shelving, but also as table tops. The heavier solid HempWood® panels are used as doors, kitchen tops, dining tables, tables for meeting rooms, restaurant tables etc.

What estimations do you have for the beginning of 2026?

T.M: Across the world, we see an increase in demand for HempWood® products, driven by the Architect and Design community, specifiers, contractors, construction companies but also by private consumers, all looking for a more sustainable alternative to traditional wood, but an alternative that outperforms it in terms of technical performance whilst contributing to a healthier living and working environment.
