Interview with Walter POISS, Managing Director at Pollux Präzisionstechnik GmbH.

A brief description of the company and its activities

Walter POISS: Pollux Präzisionstechnik GmbH is a family-owned Austrian engineering company specializing in intelligent manufacturing solutions for the tooling industry. Our core expertise lies in the development and production of high-precision grinding machines and integrated process technologies for the machining of indexable inserts and PCD/CBN rotary tools. With a strong focus on automation, modularity, and precision, we deliver solutions ranging from single-part manufacturing to fully automated large-scale production lines.

What are the main areas of activity of the company

W.P:

  • High-precision grinding machines for indexable inserts and PCD/CBN rotary tools
  • Automation solutions including robotic loading/unloading and stacking systems
  • Special measurement systems, such as the Chase Low Waviness system for ultra-precise edge and surface quality inspection
  • Process integration from raw blank to finished cutting tool
  • Service, retrofits, and customer-specific engineering solutions

What’s the news about new products?

W.P: In 2025, we are introducing our Helios 5.0+ – a modular CNC grinding center designed for both indexable inserts and complex PCD rotary tools. It offers unmatched flexibility, extreme precision, and full automation capability via a 6-axis FANUC robotic cell. We are also expanding the reach of our proven Alchimist 28 grinding machine with enhanced automation features, making it a strong candidate for high-volume production.

In addition, our Chase Low Waviness Measurement System is now available as an integrated or stand-alone solution, enabling toolmakers to measure and verify edge waviness at sub-micron levels – a major advantage for performance-critical tools.

What are the ranges of products?

W.P:

  • Alchimist 28 – Ultra-precise grinding of CBN and PCD inserts with sub-5 µm repeatability
  • Helios 5.0+ – Modular grinding center for indexable inserts and PCD rotary tools, fully automatable
  • Chase Low Waviness Measurement System – High-resolution, non-contact measurement of cutting edges
  • Automation modules – Loading systems, stackers, clamping technology, in-process dressing
  • Custom engineering – Tailored solutions for unique customer applications

At what stage is the market where you are currently active?

W.P: The global tooling industry remains highly competitive, with demand driven by sectors such as automotive, aerospace, energy, and medical. Despite economic uncertainties, there is strong investment in automation, process optimization, and high-performance cutting tools. Europe remains our primary market, with growing interest from North America, Asia, and South America.

What can you tell us about market trends?

W.P:

  • Automation and Industry 4.0 integration are no longer optional – they are essential for competitiveness
  • Multi-material capability is in demand, as toolmakers increasingly work with carbide, CBN, and PCD
  • Measurement integration is becoming a standard, with metrology moving directly into the production process
  • Energy efficiency and sustainability are influencing machine design and customer purchasing decisions

What are the most innovative products marketed?

W.P:

  • Helios 5.0+ – Combines two machining domains (indexable inserts & PCD rotary tools) in one flexible platform
  • Chase Low Waviness System – Redefines cutting edge quality control with unprecedented precision
  • Automation-ready architecture – Modular design allowing seamless upgrades from manual to fully automated production

What estimations do you have for 2024?

W.P: We anticipate continued growth in demand for high-precision and automated tool production solutions. With the market’s push towards flexible manufacturing, we expect increased adoption of modular systems like the Helios 5.0+ and measurement-integrated production lines. We also foresee stronger penetration into overseas markets, especially North America and South America.
