Case Study Snapshot: A History of Indian Railways and Safe-T-Punch™
Approximately three years ago, India experienced one of its most devastating train crashes, resulting in over 350 fatalities and hundreds of injuries. As Indian Railways is government-owned, the tragedy triggered intense political and public pressure to improve emergency exit systems across the national fleet.
The Rail Coach Factory (RCF) received formal instruction from the Indian Rail Board to identify a viable solution. An open tender was issued to the Indian population, inviting proposals for a new emergency egress system. After 18 months, no suitable solution had been presented.
Enter Hemant Goel of PD Steels Panchkula, a reputable supplier to Indian Railways. Determined to find an answer, Hemant attended InnoTrans 2024 in Berlin. On the final day of the exhibition, he discovered Safe-T-Punch™ and engaged in a direct conversation with me regarding India’s urgent need. I assured him that I could engineer a solution tailored to the challenge—and over the following months, I did exactly that.
The completed emergency glass assembly was shipped to India and personally accompanied by Pia and me. At RCF, we installed the system into a coach, and in front of the General Manager, the Chief Engineer of Indian Railways conducted a live demonstration. The device was operated intuitively—without any instruction from me—validating its instinctive design and universal usability.
This successful demonstration was formally recognized in the report submitted to the Rail Board in Delhi. I was granted full advisory control over the quality and standards deemed suitable, and I advised that the specification be written precisely according to my engineering requirements. Technical drawings were produced, and I believe the official tender for emergency windows featuring Safe-T-Punch™ has now been issued.
PD Steels will respond as our distributor and approved supplier to Indian Railways, marking a pivotal moment in the adoption of intuitive, regulator-aligned escape systems across one of the world’s largest rail networks.
Strategic Impact
This initiative not only addressed a national safety crisis—it demonstrated our ability to custom-engineer solutions from concept to compliance. From Hemant Goel’s initial outreach to the live demonstration at Rail Coach Factory, every step was guided by our commitment to:
- ✅ Customer-specific engineering tailored to real-world constraints
- ✅ Regulatory alignment with Indian Railways and national safety standards
- ✅ Intuitive design that requires no training to operate
- ✅ Full lifecycle support—from prototyping and installation to advisory control over standardization
The Safe-T-Punch™ system was not merely supplied—it was understood, adopted, and institutionalized. Our drawings now inform the official tender, and PD Steels will respond as our approved distributor. This case affirms our role as a strategic partner in public safety, capable of delivering suitable, adequate, effective, and compliant solutions—from first conversation to final regulation.
Balasore train disaster that occurred on June 2, 2023, near Bahanaga Bazar station in Odisha, India. It was one of the deadliest rail accidents in Indian history, with around 350 confirmed fatalities and over 1,000 injuries.
What Happened
- The crash involved three trains: the Coromandel Express, the Howrah–SMVT Bengaluru Express, and a stationary goods train.
- A signalling error caused the Coromandel Express to divert onto a loop line where the goods train was parked, resulting in a catastrophic collision and derailment.
