Interview with Rik Mertens, Global Product Manager — Applications at Datacolor

Rik, can you briefly introduce Datacolor and its core mission?

Rik Mertens: Absolutely. Datacolor is a global leader in color management solutions, headquartered in Switzerland. For over 50 years, we’ve been helping companies across a wide range of industries — from textiles and plastics to paint, coatings and digital imaging — ensure color accuracy, consistency and efficiency. Our solutions include high-precision spectrophotometers, intelligent software and expert support to streamline color development, communication and control.

What are the main areas of activity for Datacolor today?

RM: We support a broad spectrum of industries where color plays a critical role in quality and brand identity. Our key areas include textile and apparel, plastics, paint and coatings, automotive interiors, ink and print, and even cosmetics. We offer tools for color formulation, quality control and digital color communication that are tailored to the specific workflows and challenges of each of these industries.

What’s new in terms of products or services in 2025?

RM: We’ve had an exciting start to the year! In March, we launched the Spectro P Series, our next-generation portable spectrophotometer platform. It’s designed for demanding industrial environments where consistent color quality control is essential. It’s compact, precise and integrates seamlessly with our software ecosystem.

Additionally, we’ve recently acquired TECHKON GmbH, a renowned provider of color measurement technology. This strategic move strengthens our position in the printing and packaging sectors and expands our product portfolio.

Can you give us an overview of your product and service ranges?

RM: Certainly. Our portfolio includes:

  • Spectrophotometers (portable and benchtop)
  • Color matching and formulation software (such as Datacolor Colibri®)
  • Quality control platforms
  • Lighting and viewing solutions
  • Color calibration tools for monitors and cameras

We also offer consulting, training and support services to integrate color management into a customer’s workflows. All these solutions help customers accelerate development cycles, reduce waste, and improve cross-location color consistency.

What’s the current state of the markets you serve?

RM: Although some regions are facing economic challenges, we see many companies are still moving forward with investments in color management. And it’s strategic. It helps them work more efficiently, cut down on raw material use, and support their sustainability goals simultaneously.

What trends are shaping the future of your industry?

RM: Digitalization is front and center. Companies want to digitize their workflows and minimize physical sampling. Sustainability is another major driver. Brands are under pressure to reduce resource usage and carbon footprint, and smart color management plays a key role in that. Lastly, we see a growing emphasis on data integration. Our customers want tools that seamlessly connect with their ERP and PLM systems.

For over 30 years, Rik has been an integral part of Datacolor. As the Subject Matter Expert for the paint and coatings industry and the applications specialist for all Datacolor software, he knows the ins and outs of managing color throughout the supply chain. Rik works with global key accounts in the PCS industry to define and implement color management solutions tailored to their needs. He also works closely with product managers and R&D to update and improve Datacolor software.

What would you say are your most innovative offerings right now?

RM: One of the highlights is the Spectro 1000 family, our latest generation of benchtop spectrophotometers, which sets new standards in accuracy, speed and inter-instrumental agreement. We’re also seeing strong interest in Datacolor SpectraVision, our hyperspectral solution designed to measure complex and multicolor materials — ideal for prints, laces and irregular patterns.

What are your expectations for the second half of 2025?

RM: We’re optimistic. With the integration of TECHKON and the rollout of new products, we expect continued growth, especially in packaging and industrial applications. We’re also investing in AI and digital services, which will open up opportunities for innovation and customer engagement.
