Enerpoly is a Stockholm-based deeptech company that is focused on advancing renewable energy storage solutions through their patented zinc-ion battery technology. The company develops and manufactures batteries using globally abundant materials, zinc and manganese. These batteries are environmentally friendly, cost-effective and safe, contributing to the global transition towards sustainable and clean energy sources.
Interview with Mylad Chamoun, CTO and Co-Founder of Enerpoly.
Easy Engineering: What are the main areas of activity of the company?
Mylad Chamoun: Enerpoly activities are largely engaged with the renewable energy storage sector, developing and producing zinc-ion batteries. Our batteries are perfectly suited for grid-scale storage with 2 to 10-hour discharge durations. This means our batteries can address various large-scale stationary energy storage requirements, including supporting the grid, providing reliable backup power and commercial standby.
E.E: What’s the news about new products?
M.C: Enerpoly’s advancements in zinc-ion battery technology make the company a pioneer of innovation in the sector. One such development includes achieving up to 2000 charge cycles, a notable step forward compared to the capacities of traditional zinc-ion batteries. Additionally, we have recently secured a $8.4Mgrant from the Swedish Energy Agency, which will be used to build the world’s first production plant to manufacture zinc-ion batteries.
E.E: At what stage is the market where you are currently active?
M.C: As the global shift towards sustainable energy accelerates, clean energy solutions have become a dynamic, high-growth market. McKinsey currently values the energy storage market between $44-55bn, and predicts that it will more than double in size to $150B by 2030. This rapid growth in the market and wider demand is primarily driven by increased awareness of environmental issues and global regulatory support for clean energy initiatives.
E.E: What can you tell us about market trends?
M.C: Changing attitudes towards sustainability and the environment have transformed the direction of the energy sector. Regulations and policies such as the Inflation Reduction Act in the US, and the European Union’s REPowerEU plan signal that shifting to clean energy and renewable sources are a global imperative. As more governments enact similar policies favouring clean energy adoption, the demand for sustainable solutions will continue to surge.
As a result, Enerpoly is well-positioned to capitalise on the growing demand for renewable energy sources and contribute to the ongoing evolution of the energy market towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
E.E: What are the most innovative products marketed?
M.C: Enerpoly’s development of zinc-ion batteries is our company’s primary innovation. Using patented technology, we have developed batteries recognised for their safety, sustainability and affordability.
Through utilising water-based components, we have ensured the safety of our batteries as they are non-toxic, non-explosive and non-flammable. In addition to safety, environmental considerations are evident in the materials used, contributing to a substantial reduction in energy consumption during the production processes. This commitment plays a major role in achieving up to 80% lower carbon impact than traditional lithium-ion batteries.
Furthermore, Enerpoly’s dedication to sustainability extends to the end-of-life stage, with our batteries engineered to be fully recyclable at this point. This further reduces our carbon footprint and reflects our overarching dedication to sustainability. The strategic use of globally available and reusable materials, particularly zinc, also contributes significantly to the cost-effectiveness of our batteries. Over their lifetimes, Enerpoly’s batteries are estimated to cost 35% less when compared to typical energy storage solutions.
In essence, Enerpoly’s zinc-ion battery is an innovation that meets affordability, safety and sustainability demands that will become non-negotiable as the energy transition continues. Our product not only addresses the current challenges in energy storage, but also paves the way for a more sustainable and affordable future.
