Interview with Guillaume ten Dam, Application Specialist at DSP-Systems.
Easy Engineering: A brief description of the company and its activities.
Guillaume ten Dam: We specialize in distributing and maintaining state-of-the-art sample preparation systems from renowned manufacturers in Japan (Miura) and Canada (PromoChrom). These systems are not only smart and eco-friendly but also represent the technological advancement in laboratory equipment and automated capabilities.
In addition, we provide a wide range of consumables, analytical standards, and expertise and knowledge. Having many years of experience at the Wageningen University our staff members are well equipped to provide expert training programs, analytical services, and application development, ensuring that our clients analytical demands are met and laboratory operations reach full potential.
E.E: What are the main areas of activity of the company?
G.t.D: Central to our philosophy is the commitment to sustainability. We recognize the pressing need to minimize the environmental impact of laboratory work, particularly in the consumption of harmful organic solvents. By collaborating with us, laboratories benefit from our approach to promoting greener laboratory solutions and thereby help contributing to a sustainable planet.
Samples analyzed by the laboratories we serve include food, feed, water, soil, air monitoring, as well as pharmaceuticals, proteins, and biological samples. This makes our systems flexible and suitable for a large number of samples and laboratories, achieving precise and reliable results.
With extensive experience in laboratory operations and a strong chemistry background, our team is well-equipped to assist customers in setting up their analytical projects. These projects include a range of services, including education, training, and the provision of turn-key lab solutions.
E.E: What’s the news about new products/services?
G.t.D: In close collaboration with manufacturers, we optimize systems and methods to meet laboratory requirements. For the Miura GO-EHT methods, our focus is on EPA methods 1613 and 1668 for the North American market. For Promochrom’s SPE systems, we have invested in expanding our expertise in PFAS testing to provide enhanced support and training to SPE customers. The SPE system serves as a versatile platform for a wide range of applications and recent sales to laboratories using SPE for protein purification have prompted us to support more complex configurations.
E.E: What are the ranges of products/services?
G.t.D: DSP-Systems’ main supplier is Miura, a leading Japanese manufacturer specializing in automated sample preparation systems tailored specifically for Dioxins and PCBs analysis. Our representation extends across Europe and North America, making us Miura’s largest and preferred distributor in both continents. Our commitment to customer satisfaction extends beyond product sales. We conduct annual preventive maintenance visits to ensure the continuous smooth operation of installed systems. This proactive approach minimizes downtime and maximizes efficiency for our clients. Important is the systems are well known for their reliability and dependability.
Since 2019, DSP-Systems proudly partners with PromoChrom, a prominent Canadian manufacturer renowned for its automated sample preparation systems designed a.o. for PFAS analysis. Our representation of PromoChrom extends throughout Europe, where we serve as their largest and preferred distributor. These versatile systems can be utilized across a wide spectrum of analytical methods, making them indispensable tools for virtually every laboratory. This also goes for the automated Solvent ExtractoR-SER-158, produced by Velp Scientifica, Italy and the CentriVap Benchtop Concentrator produced by Labconco USA.
In addition to our range of systems and associated consumables, we provide essential analytical standard solutions and mixtures necessary for laboratories to accurately qualify and quantify their target analytes. Our representation primarily lies with Cambridge Isotope Laboratories, USA. Our main territory for distribution is once again the EU.
E.E: What is the state of the market where you are currently active?
G.t.D: The laboratory automation market is experiencing significant growth driven by increasing number of samples laboratories have to process and related demand for fast, efficient and reproducible sample preparation techniques. European laboratories, in particular, are increasingly adopting automation to improve productivity and reduce operational costs. Moreover, there is a growing emphasis on environmental sustainability, creating opportunities for companies offering eco-friendly solutions like DSP-Systems.
E.E: What can you tell us about market trends?
G.t.D: The number of laboratories engaged in PFAS sample analysis is rapidly increasing, driven by the significant environmental concerns associated with PFAS and EU legislation. Anticipated legislation pertaining to food and feed samples will further elevate the demand for PFAS analysis across a diverse range and quantity of samples.
E.E: What are the most innovative products/services marketed?
G.t.D: The technology offered by Miura boasts several significant benefits. It utilizes the lowest amount of harmful organic solvents globally, significantly reducing processing time compared to manual methods. Furthermore, it eliminates the risk of cross-contamination, addressing a major concern for laboratories worldwide.
PromoChrom’s automated Solid-Phase Extraction (SPE) systems are characterized by their user-friendly interface and compact design. This is particularly advantageous in today’s laboratories, where space is at a premium.
E.E: What estimations do you have for 2024?
G.t.D: DSP-Systems operates in a niche field, aiming for steady growth by expanding automation in laboratories. To maintain a robust business, we are always seeking opportunities to extend our product offerings and reach a broader client base.
