INTERVIEW WITH MIDO

MIDO provides services for the construction of underground sewage networks using trenchless technologies. The company has been operating on the market for over thirty years. Years of experience in the industry have allowed MIDO to develop a unique Gravity Drilling Technology.

It is used for the construction of underground sewage networks that require a precise gravitational fall. The technology allows for a fully trenchless construction of the network between the existing sewage wells, without disassembling both the well elements and the surrounding infrastructure.

Easy Engineering: What’s the news about new products?

MIDO: Recently, we have improved the technology for making networks between DN 1500 wells, using pipes with a diameter of 500 mm. Such work requires the use of more efficient and powerful hydraulic drives.  We have improved the parameters of power supply systems for a standard drilling rig used for DN 1200 wells. We are constantly improving other elements of technology to work more effectively and efficiently. We are also constantly expanding our offer with new solutions for unusual projects and installations, where unusual solutions in the form of adapters and connectors must be used, enabling the connection of our constructed networks with their existing elements. Our technical facilities and a team of designers are able to design and implement any unusual solution.

E.E: What are the ranges of products?

MIDO: Our technology allows you to build networks in practice at any depth. We have already built pipelines at depths exceeding several meters. We are constantly building networks at depths where groundwater is plentiful. We build networks between typical sewage wells DN 1000, DN 1200 and DN 1500 and between wells of unusual shapes and between technical excavations. The range of pipe diameters used reaches 500 mm. PP piping is resistant from pH 2 (acid) to pH 12 (alkaline) against corrosion caused by water such as municipal sewage, rainwater, surface water and groundwater. Our pipes are characterized by very high wall smoothness, which results in very low flow resistance. Polypropylene is characterized by the lack of moisture absorption and very high chemical resistance. These parameters mean that pipes made of polypropylene have a very low ability to overgrow the internal surfaces of sewage pipes. Pipes made of PP work thermally, i.e. they change their dimensions depending on the temperature. This additionally favors the removal of deposits, which, as a result of changes in pipe dimensions, crack and are washed away by the flowing stream of liquid flowing in the pipeline. Another extremely important feature of pipes made of PP plastic is their flexibility. Compared to rigid traditional stoneware pipes, pipes made of PP are more resistant to mechanical damage, unsealing of the installation, occurring as a result of stresses resulting from the movement of the ground. We also build networks using other plastic pipes, depending on the design requirements. The Gravity Drilling Technology covers both the construction of new installations and the renovation of existing, damaged networks.

E.E: At what stage is the market where you are currently active?

MIDO: At our current state of knowledge, we are the only company offering the services described above in a fully trenchless manner, without interfering with any elements of the existing infrastructure. Sewage manholes between which we build new networks or repair existing ones are usually located on busy roadways. Our technology allows you to avoid traffic problems in places covered by construction, related to the need to shut them down. We limit ourselves to occupying only one lane with a sewage well. We insert our drilling rig into the starting well through a typical DN 600 manhole. The construction of the pipeline takes place in the area of the ending well, using PP pipe modules, successively connected to each other. The current market related to the construction of underground gravitational networks increasingly requires the use of our construction technology. The construction and renovation of the network with its use is very often carried out in densely built-up urban agglomerations. The use of other technologies very often leads to serious communication difficulties or even communication paralysis, caused by excluding the entire construction area from traffic.

E.E: What can you tell us about market trends?

MIDO: The use of our Gravity Drilling Technology will certainly find more and more applications. As we mentioned in the previous question, it brings a significant reduction in harmful social costs in the form of a reduction in communication difficulties and a reduction in the nuisance of the works carried out for the environment. This technology, however, is primarily a significant reduction of direct costs associated with construction. It is the ability to perform works in a fully trenchless manner, which would be impossible, highly difficult and carry the risk of failure, even leading to a construction disaster using other technologies. More and more often we receive inquiries about the possibility of implementing networks in places where other contractors had to give up due to lack of hardware capabilities and high risk of failure. This trend will continue. In addition, we are currently living in times where we place great emphasis on ecology, on reducing pollution generated into the atmosphere. Gravity Drilling technology is also a big step towards ecology in the construction industry by reducing exhaust emissions. With the work of one machine with a combustion engine, we replace a large fleet of construction machines, such as excavators, compressors, other heavy drilling equipment, tippers, loaders.

E.E: What are the most innovative products marketed?

MIDO: According to our knowledge related to trenchless technologies, no machine manufacturer for this industry offers a device or technology that we have at our disposal. It is worth noting that our technology is the result of many years of work on the machine and technology that filled this gap and allowed for the fully trenchless construction of precise gravity sewage systems, between typical sewage wells and in all ground conditions.

E.E: What estimations do you have for 2023?

MIDO: Currently, we operate mainly in our home country, i.e. Poland. Since the middle of last year, we have been conducting a more complete information campaign about the possibilities of our technology than in previous years, among design offices, city offices, contractors and other enterprises related to water and sewage management. We promote our technology during all industry events. The effect of these actions is beginning to be clearly visible. We can clearly see an increase in interest in our technology, which results in an increase in inquiries and orders, despite the visible crisis on the construction market. Currently, with the help of four teams and four sets of fully equipped technical vehicles, we carry out further orders in Poland. If such a dynamic growth trend continues, we will probably end 2023 with a dozen or so construction brigades to meet the needs of the Polish market. In 2023, we also plan to expand to other European countries, starting with Germany.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that our technology has been appreciated by a large group of experts in the trenchless technology industry in recent years. In 2021, during the 19th International Trenchless Engineering Conference 2021, we won the TYTAN 2021 award for innovative technology. In 2022, we won the Grand Prix award at the 28th International WOD-KAN Fair.
