INNERSPEC: GLOBAL LEADER IN ADVANCED NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING SOLUTIONS

Innerspec is a manufacturer of Non-Destructive Testing solutions based on its own proprietary technology. The company’s products include integrated systems for manufacturing plants as well as portable solutions for in-service applications. Innerspec pioneered commercial applications of Electro Magnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT) in the mid-1990s, becoming a world leader in this technology with hundreds of systems installed worldwide. More recently, the company has expanded its portfolio by adding additional techniques to better serve customers’ advanced non-destructive testing needs.

Innerspec is headquartered in Forest, Virginia (USA) and is supported by a highly specialized team of researchers, development engineers, customer support specialists, and technicians dedicated to the design and support of its products and services. Its offices in the United States, Europe, Mexico, China, and Bahrain, along with representatives around the globe, provide commercial and technical support through factory-trained personnel.

Interview with Borja Lopez, President & CEO at Innerspec Technologies, Inc.

A brief description of the company and its activities

Borja Lopez: Innerspec is a global leader in advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) solutions. The company pioneered commercial applications of Electro-Magnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT) in the mid-1990s, becoming the world leader in this technology with hundreds of systems installed worldwide.

In recent years, we have expanded our portfolio to include conventional Phased Array Ultrasonics (PAUT), Eddy Current, and Laser Measurement technologies, allowing us to provide comprehensive advanced NDT solutions to our customers.

With headquarters in the United States and Spain and a strong international presence, we combine world-class research and engineering expertise to solve the most complex inspection challenges.

What are the main areas of activity of the company?

B.L: We operate in two main areas: Portable Instruments and Factory-Integrated Systems. We are the world leader in portable EMAT instruments and one of the main players in integrated NDT systems in North America and Europe. Since 1994, we have delivered over 2,000 systems serving a wide variety of non-destructive testing applications.

The company develops proprietary techniques and designs and manufactures its own electronics, software, and system automations. This vertical integration allows us to deliver optimized solutions tailored to our customers’ specific inspection needs.

What’s the news about new products/services?

B.L: In recent years, we have expanded our robotic inspection solutions under the CHORUS brand. One of the most recent systems is CHORUS AL-NB, which uses EMAT technology for in-line inspection of cast aluminum logs. This first-of-its-kind system incorporates several advanced technologies, including an integrated laser tracking system that maintains precise sensor alignment during inspection.

At our factory in Spain, we have designed and built RONDO GT, the fastest and most complex tube inspection system on the market, featuring over 1,000 ultrasonic channels.

On the portable side, we have expanded the applications of our VOLTA MRUT portfolio with the patented MRUT SIZING scanner, enabling quantitative wall thickness measurement for corrosion under pipe supports and inspection of buried or inaccessible interfaces.

We are also preparing the release of VOLTA FST, our next-generation portable EMAT platform for thickness measurement in boiler tubes, pipelines, and tanks. This system will deliver multi-channel capability on our latest VOLTA platform.

What are the ranges of products/services?

B.L: We serve a wide range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, nuclear, railroad, oil & gas, primary metals, and tube & pipe markets.

Our product portfolio includes portable inspection instruments and fully integrated automated systems for industrial production environments. We develop EMAT, Phased Array UT, Eddy Current, and laser measurement solutions for both field deployment and factory integration.

Our integrated solutions combine advanced sensors, robotics, custom electromechanical design, and proprietary software to ensure reliable, repeatable performance with minimal operator involvement. Each system is engineered for precision, durability, and seamless integration into demanding manufacturing processes.

What is the state of the market where you are currently active?

B.L: Our CHORUS robotic platform is among the most advanced robotic NDT solutions currently available. It integrates cameras to locate and map components in space and utilizes intelligent software to scan surfaces and perform full volumetric inspections. It is particularly well suited for the inspection of large aerospace composite structures.

For in-service inspections, our VOLTA instrument represents the state of the art in guided wave applications, particularly for pipelines and tanks.

We are also developing several new applications that cannot yet be disclosed.

What can you tell us about market trends?

B.L: A major trend in the NDT market is the rapid adoption of automated and digitally connected inspection systems. Customers are moving beyond simple defect detection and increasingly expect intelligent systems that integrate seamlessly into manufacturing processes, reduce costs, and improve asset utilization to maximize return on investment.

There is also growing demand for advanced software that reduces operator dependency and enhances consistency. The industry is clearly evolving toward smarter, more integrated inspection platforms.

What are the most innovative products/services marketed?

B.L: The NDT industry continuously develops faster and more capable instruments and sensors; however, improvements tend to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Given the safety-critical nature of inspection work, the industry continues to favor physics-based solutions that follow established standards over black-box artificial intelligence approaches.

Artificial intelligence is gaining more traction in process-control applications, where the objective is cost savings through process optimization rather than quality control.

Automation remains a major innovation driver in the market, and we are at the forefront of that trend.

What estimations do you have for the beginning of 2026?

B.L: We have entered 2026 with a strong backlog in integrated systems and growing demand for our portable equipment. Although costs have increased significantly due to new tariffs and cost-of-living adjustments, we remain well positioned thanks to our unique portfolio and strong technical advantages over competitors.

We anticipate solid performance in 2026 and expect continued growth in the coming years.
