myenergi is one of the world’s fastest-growing renewable tech companies, renowned for designing a wide range of eco-smart solutions that help users to reduce reliance on mains energy supply.
The company is best known for designing the market’s first eco-smart electric vehicle charging device – zappi – a future-proofed solution that, alongside operating as a mains-connected charging device, seamlessly integrates with renewable energy generation technologies like solar and small wind turbines. This means that zappi users can harness self-generated energy to charge their EV for free! If a household doesn’t yet have renewable generation, zappi is able to automatically optimise around your energy tariff to enable charging at both cheaper and greener times.
Interview with Jordan Brompton, Co-Founder and CMO of myenergi.
Easy Engineering: A brief description of the company and its activities
Jordan Brompton: Alongside zappi, we also manufacture a wide range of other devices – such as eddi, the UK’s #1 solar power diverter, which diverts surplus renewable energy to domestic heating systems; and harvi, an energy monitoring wireless sensor that allows the zappi and eddi to be installed without wiring a direct CT clamp.
We founded the business in 2016 with nothing, apart from a few good ideas and a serious passion for change. From our humble beginnings, we’ve since taken the market by storm, recently shipping our 300,000th unit and opening subsidiaries in Germany, Ireland, Australia and the Netherlands along the way.
Our belief is that no one can change the world on their own. However, what they can do is inspire the future. At myenergi, we may just be one company, but we’re passionate about driving a global movement – changing the way people think, feel and behave when it comes to sustainability.
E.E: What are the main areas of activity of the company?
J.B: From electric vehicle chargers and solar power diverters, to energy monitoring wireless sensors, we manufacture a wide range of eco-smart renewable energy technologies to help users reduce their reliance on mains supply. Alongside homeowners, we supply our unique products to a wide range of businesses operating across the globe.
From the early days of myenergi, we wanted our products to fix problems – to help users maximise the value of self-generated energy, to help minimise reliance on fossil fuels and to help accelerate the transition to electrification. As society transitions towards the zero-carbon world of tomorrow, we’re committed to developing new solutions to make energy independence simple and achievable.
Our innovative products are built on a commitment to circularity and a vision of sustainability for generations to come. They demonstrate the disruptive potential of next-generation eco-smart technology and bridge the gap to the smart home of tomorrow.
E.E: What’s the news about new products?
J.B: At myenergi, we continue to innovate, developing new and improved solutions to offer our customers complete energy independence. While we’re sworn to secrecy, we have a number of new products in the pipeline – some of which will be unveiled later this year.
E.E: What are the ranges of products?
J.B: Currently, our product range comprises three key models; zappi, eddi and harvi. Each eco-smart solution has been designed to help users reduce reliance on mains supply and become more energy independent.
zappi is a smart EV charger with a difference. Not only does it operate as a standard EV charger, but it also has optional charging modes to utilise 100% green energy generated from your solar PV panels or wind turbine. Increasing the return on investment (ROI) for your panels and electric car, the zappi is easy to install and user friendly. But don’t worry, if you don’t have solar panels installed, the zappi will still operate as a standard EV charger harnessing power from the grid.
Being the first-ever solar EV charger of its kind, our innovative team has carefully designed features and functions to give you complete control of your electric car charging experience. Paired with the myenergi app, you can set timers to utilise economy tariffs, use the boost function, monitor your devices, and so much more!
Bring an eddi into your home and you can make the most of the 100% green energy generated from your solar PV panels or wind turbine.
Rather than exporting excess energy back to the grid, with our intelligent eddi power diverter, that extra power is diverted back to your heating systems, thus heating water with 100% self-generated green energy.
harvi is a clever little device that allows the zappi and eddi to be installed without wiring a direct CT clamp. The harvi is an energy monitoring wireless sensor – an essential part of the installation process that saves both time and money.
It eliminates unsightly wiring, prevents disruption to your home decor and enables the myenergi product family to be installed without using a hardwired current transformer.
E.E: At what stage is the market where you are currently active?
J.B: When it comes to the electric vehicle home charger market, the sector is in the height of its growth phase. Indeed, according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), registrations of new battery-electric cars (BEV) in April 2022 increased by more than 40% year-on-year, while sales of diesel and petrol car sales decreased by 50% and 23% respectively. Furthermore, according to Sky News, the sales of used BEVs also reached record rates in Q1 2022, with some 14,586 pre-owned vehicles changing hands (more than double compared to the same period in 2021).
With more than 80% of all EV charging taking place at home, our zappi device continues to prove popular with electric vehicle drivers all over the world. We are seeing ever-increasing demand for product supply, with customers keen to invest in a future-proof charging solution.
When it comes to the eco-smart home energy market, however, the industry is at a much earlier stage. Connected technology, energy independence and the smart home of tomorrow are relativity new ideas – meaning education is needed to drive a broader understanding and to kick-start the sector’s global growth.
However, with energy prices continuing to rise and the volatility of global utility supply showing no sign of easing, it’s becoming an area of increasing focus for both consumers and businesses. At myenergi, we’re committed to operating at the vanguard and driving the smart home of tomorrow.
E.E: What are the most innovative products marketed?
J.B: We pride ourselves on leading the sector when it comes to game-changing product innovation, but we’re probably best known for designing and manufacturing zappi – the world’s first eco-smart EV charging device.
Rather than a lightbulb moment, the vision for zappi came from a conversation over a bottle of wine. At the time, my co-founder Lee was driving an EV and couldn’t understand why there wasn’t a product on the market that allowed him to charge the battery via the solar panels installed on his house. We spent years designing and developing a product that could solve this challenge, launching zappi in 2017.
Alongside operating as a mains-connected charging device, zappi seamlessly integrates with renewable energy generation technologies like solar and small wind turbines. This means that zappi users can harness self-generated energy to charge their EV for free. If a household doesn’t yet have renewable generation, zappi is able to automatically optimise around your energy tariff to enable charging at both cheaper and greener times.
By pioneering the world’s first eco-smart home charger, we’ve built a global following of eco-savvy consumers who are each playing their part in the renewable revolution.
E.E: What estimations do you have for 2022?
J.B: We see innovation as more than just change. We see it as an opportunity to embrace the future. myenergi is innovative in every sense of the word – our technology has disrupted a hugely competitive market, providing a fresh approach that drives, rather than follows.
In the past three years alone, the team has increased from 36 to 346 and product sales have skyrocketed. Last year, we opened our 15,000 sq ft flagship eco headquarters, with plans for a brand new 50,000 sq manufacturing facility announced just weeks later.
In 2022, we’re looking forward to further building upon this growth, continuing to delight our customers and bringing our eco-smart product range to new geographies across the globe. Behind the scenes, we’re continuing our ambitious new product development timeline and further expanding our talented team.
Looking further ahead, our goal is to become the go-to household name for innovative, pioneering eco-smart technologies – used, respected and trusted by homeowners worldwide. Our strategy to achieve this ambition is to build a strong foundation, in preparation to further expand internationally.
