Interview with Rebecca Bell, Marketing & Improvements at Alcolizer Technology.

What are the main areas of activity of the company?

Rebecca Bell: Our core activities encompass the development, manufacture, and supply of alcohol breath testing and drug testing equipment, along with data collection and management services. We cater to various industries, including law enforcement, workplace safety, health, and road transport, providing a range of testing solutions designed to meet regulatory compliance and safety requirements.

What’s the news about new products?

R.B: We continually innovate to address the evolving needs of our customers. Alcolizer has been at the forefront of integrating new testing methods to enhance the efficiency of drug and alcohol testing. A key development is the AlcoCONNECT™ platform, which facilitates real-time analysis of drug and alcohol testing data, enabling businesses to effectively monitor workplace safety.

Our flagship products include the LE5 Alcohol and Drug Testers and oral saliva drug testing devices, as well as wall-mounted breathalysers like the Centurion Quantum and Zero Tolerance models. These are widely used across industries and can be integrated into time management and third-party safety and compliance software. Alcolizer’s dedication to research and development drives our innovation, particularly in aligning our testing equipment with global safety standards and workplace requirements.

What are the ranges of products?

R.B: Our product portfolio features handheld breathalysers, wall-mounted alcohol testing units, portable drug testing devices, and related consumables such as urine cups and saliva drug test cartridges. Additionally, we provide software solutions for data management and reporting, as well as calibration and servicing programs to ensure ongoing accuracy and compliance with industry standards.

What is the state of the market where you are currently active?

R.B: The alcohol and drug testing market are experiencing growth, fuelled by an increased regulatory focus on workplace safety and the demand for reliable and efficient testing solutions in law enforcement. Despite competitive conditions, Alcolizer maintains a leading position, thanks to our advanced technology, dependable performance, and established reputation for quality.

What can you tell us about market trends?

R.B: The market is shifting towards more integrated, real-time solutions that merge alcohol and drug testing with digital reporting and data analytics. There is a growing demand for inhouse and hybrid testing capabilities, and we believe wearable technology represents the next advancement for continuous monitoring.

Additionally, we are noticing an increased emphasis on non-invasive testing methods and the expansion of drug detection to include synthetic substances, beyond traditional drugs. The National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program recently released a report indicating that the consumption of methylamphetamine, cocaine, and 3,4-methylenedioxymethylamphetamine (MDMA) has increased significantly. Last year, more than 16.5 tonnes of methylamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and MDMA were consumed combined, reflecting a 17% rise in usage compared to the previous year. When including THC (cannabis), the total consumption of these five illicit drugs exceeded 30 tonnes nationally.

What are the most innovative products/services marketed?

R.B: Our innovative product offerings include the Alcolizer LE5, a portable and highly accurate Breathalyzer utilized by law enforcement and industry, as well as the Druglizer, a comprehensive solution for on-the-spot drug detection. We are also developing the next generation of testing devices, including wearables and advanced surface testing solutions, which are set to revolutionize alcohol and drug testing in critical environments. The increased presence of THC in the workplace presents substantial challenges for employers, particularly in high-risk industries. As the use of medical marijuana increases in Australia, employers must establish comprehensive policies that balance workplace safety with employee rights.

While drug testing remains a vital tool for identifying THC, it is not always a reliable indicator of impairment, especially for medical users. Moving forward, it is crucial for employers to adhere to Australian Standards as a benchmark and ensure they are utilizing independently certified products.

What estimations do you have for 2024?

R.B: We foresee significant growth in 2024, particularly within sectors such as healthcare, law enforcement, and heavy industry. As regulatory environments tighten and the demand for safer workplaces rises, we expect increased sales of both alcohol and drug testing products and services.

The alcohol and drug testing market in Australia is experiencing robust growth, fuelled by stringent regulations in workplaces and law enforcement, as well as the potential future deregulation of recreational drugs. The Australian market is anticipated to align with global trends, with substantial growth projected from 2024 to 2030, especially in the workplace and roadside testing sectors.

In Australia, the demand for alcohol and drug testing is rising, driven by the need to maintain safety standards in high-risk industries such as mining, construction, and transportation. Roadside testing for substances like cannabis and methamphetamines is also becoming increasingly important. The market is expected to grow, particularly in terms of product development, with advanced testing methods—including oral fluid and hair sample testing—gaining popularity for their ability to detect both recent and long-term drug use.

The consequences of drug and alcohol abuse in the workplace are significant. It not only endangers employee safety but also exposes businesses to risks of accidents, decreased productivity, and legal liabilities. Therefore, taking proactive measures to address this issue is crucial.

By implementing robust testing solutions, you can:

  • Safeguard Workplace Safety: Reduce the risk of accidents and injuries by ensuring your employees are fit for duty and free from impairment.
  • Boost Productivity: Identify and address performance issues related to substance abuse, leading to enhanced productivity and efficiency across your organization.
  • Mitigate Legal Risks: Demonstrate compliance with workplace safety regulations and minimize the risk of costly litigation associated with drug and alcohol-related incidents.
