MILK PROTEIN FIBRE TEXTILES FOR SUSTAINABLE DESIGN: INTERVIEW WITH RIR & CO

RiR & Co is a Spanish textile design studio that fuses traditional craft techniques with innovative materials, best known for its award-winning D-Leite collection of milk protein fibre blankets – hypoallergenic, biodegradable, and EUIPO-registered. Beyond its own designs, the studio offers creative consultancy across fashion, gastronomy, interior design, and architecture, and is now seeking industry partners to scale production for international markets.

A brief description of the company and its activities.

RiR & Co is a textile design company and studio that combines tradition and innovation in its textiles. With an in-depth understanding of traditional craft techniques, it designs and manufactures home furnishings that are kind to both the environment and people. Its milk protein fibre blankets for babies and adults have won various awards in Spain and across Europe, including the European Craft Textile Award. It has also experimented with other materials, such as optical fibre, to create unique designs.

As well as producing its own designs, it offers creative consultancy services for other projects that bridge the gap between textile craftsmanship and industry. It has worked across sectors as diverse as fashion, gastronomy, interior design and architecture. The owner and designer is Inés Rodriguez, an educator, textile researcher and artist who is deeply committed to sustainability and to fostering collaboration between craftsmanship, innovation and design. She also works as a creative consultant and mentor on entrepreneurial projects.

What are the main areas of activity of the company?

The textile studio focuses primarily on research and textile production. It combines traditional weaving techniques with various innovative materials, such as milk protein fibre and optical fibre. Its designer, Inés Rodriguez, has an in-depth knowledge of fibres and textile techniques, which she draws upon in her design work to create new products. Furthermore, collaboration is in the company’s DNA, which is why it creates designs for other companies to foster collaboration between textile heritage and the most innovative industry.

Sustainability, care for the environment and design come together in its textile creations.

Another area of focus is participation in projects that promote local development and the revival of traditional fibres for new designs or business models. In this creative consultancy role, Inés Rodriguez works with other companies or projects to design programmes or provide training for entrepreneurs.

What’s the news about new products/services?

Estudio Textil’s most innovative product is the D-Leite collection of milk protein fibre blankets for adults and babies. These unique, handcrafted blankets are hypoallergenic, biodegradable and feature a timeless, distinctive design that has been registered with the EUIPO.

They reflect RIR & CO’s values, which are based on sustainability and the fusion of artisanal heritage with innovation, and as such have been recognised with various awards in this field.

Customers who already enjoy our unique milk protein fibre blankets appreciate the product’s quality, exclusivity, care and comfort.

The company is currently seeking to internationalise the product through collaboration with industry partners and investors.

What are the ranges of products/services?

Our textile designs and products are unique and represent premium, high-end craftsmanship. Inés Rodriguez, textile designer and owner of RiR & Co, seeks out the finest materials and ensures that the fabrics are produced responsibly in Europe, whilst providing meticulous customer service.

As part of her textile design services for other companies, she also works as a creative consultant to create unique designs for businesses across various sectors, including fashion, interior design, other industries and even gastronomy.

Another aspect of these creative consultancy services is her involvement in design programmes that promote the revival of traditional fibres such as linen and wool for various industrial uses, thereby fostering entrepreneurship and local development, particularly in rural areas.

What is the state of the market where you are currently active?

The market in which RiR & Co currently operates is the European market. Our customers are looking for a high-quality product, with values and a history that reflect conscious and honest consumption.

The materials used in our exclusive blankets are mostly natural, and the careful craftsmanship of our products, as well as the transparency in our communication via our website and social media, means that our textile designs are highly valued.

In the future, the company would like to expand its production through sustainable manufacturing, collaborating with other industries and targeting the American market.

What can you tell us about market trends?

Market trends within the textile sector are moving towards sustainability and recycling due to the industry’s environmental impact. That is why more environmentally conscious consumers are seeking second-hand textile products or those made from natural fibres that have a lower environmental impact. High-quality products are more highly valued amongst demographic groups such as the silver economy and young people from Generation Z.

The search for new biodegradable fibres and the drive towards the recovery of natural fibres, the optimisation of resources and differentiation through culture and artisanal techniques is undoubtedly a trend, particularly in the fashion industry.

In my view, traceability, raw materials and water will be crucial for the future. In Europe, we must also capitalise on our potential in terms of culture and artisanal processes, which set premium products apart, whilst also investing in the production and research of biodegradable raw materials.

In such a globalised world, identity and culture provide a sense of belonging; combined with design, natural materials and sustainable production, this represents a commitment to the future that requires collaboration across many sectors of the textile industry.

What are the most innovative products/services marketed?

Without a doubt, our D_Leite milk protein fibre blankets for babies and adults, although the biomaterials industry is making strides within the textile sector with particularly innovative products designed for patients’ health and comfort. Health and biomaterials are also a trend for the future; temperature-regulating textiles and those for therapeutic use will shape the future of the textile industry.

What estimations do you have for the second half of 2026?

For the second quarter of 2026, the textile firm is preparing its Christmas campaign and  also plans to boost the international expansion of its milk protein fibre blankets for adults in countries such as France, Germany and the Netherlands.

This year, RiR & Co has begun the search for an investment partner to drive the company’s growth and the development of new R&D projects for the D-Leite milk protein fibre blanket collection, through sustainable manufacturing that combines the quality of artisanal production with industrial processes.

With this new business model, which combines product quality with manufacturing and responsible industrialisation, the company could gain access to new markets in the coming years, drive forward more textile research projects and achieve sustainable growth in the years ahead.

Inés Rodriguez, the company’s designer and CEO, has always worked to ensure that traditional craftsmanship in textiles can be incorporated into the industry to create new products and new business models for the future.
