EV BATTERY & CHIP CERAMICS: MEICHENG INTERVIEW

Operating out of headquarter facilities in China alongside a dedicated UK subsidiary, Meicheng manages the complete manufacturing chain—from ceramic powder formulation and tape casting to metallisation, brazing, and high-precision CNC machining.

Jim Xia, Business Director at Meicheng New Materials, outlines how the advanced ceramics manufacturer is expanding its vertically integrated production model across European and US markets. Xia highlights how the company’s new production lines for aluminium nitride (AlN) and silicon nitride (Si3 N4) substrates, metal ceramic heaters (MCH), and ready-to-integrate metallised battery sealing rings support strict thermal and electrical isolation demands in electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage systems (ESS), and semiconductor fabrication.

A brief description of the company and its activities.

Jim Xia: Meicheng New Materials is one of Asia’s largest advanced ceramic manufacturers. We develop and manufacture advanced structural ceramics, metallised ceramic components and ceramic-to-metal assemblies, ranging from high-volume standard parts to fully customised precision components.

A major strength is our vertically integrated manufacturing system. We manage the key stages in-house, including ceramic powder development and preparation, mould and tooling design, forming, sintering, metallisation, nickel plating, brazing, precision machining and inspection. This enables us to control quality throughout the process and provide customers with a reliable one-stop solution.

With our headquarter in China as well as UK subcompany to serve the Europe & U.S customer, we are able to provide on time support for customers around the globe.

What are the main areas of activity of the company?

J.X: Our main activities focus on advanced ceramic solutions for the new-energy power sector, electric-vehicle, sensor and electrical-equipment, semiconductor, and industrial-manufacturing sectors. Within these markets, our components are used in energy-storage systems, relays and contactors, battery sealing systems, fuses, sensors, electrical insulation systems and demanding precision mechanical assemblies.

What is new regarding your products and services?

J.X: Our latest additions include aluminium nitride and silicon nitride plates and substrates for the semiconductor industry, as well as metal ceramic heater (MCH) products. Our new tape-casting production line allows us to manufacture consistent, thin ceramic plates and substrates with greater flexibility for different dimensions and production volumes. Combined with our precision-machining and metallisation capabilities, it enables us to offer more advanced and integrated solutions.

What ranges of products and services do you offer?

J.X: We can supply products based on Meicheng’s existing designs or develop components according to a customer’s drawings and application requirements. Our portfolio includes ceramic relay shells and chambers, fuse bodies and tubes, insulators, sealing rings and ceramic-to-metal sealing assemblies, thermostat ceramics, sensor elements and substrates, magnetron ceramics, ceramic arms, plungers, tubes, plates and customised structural components.

Our forming capabilities include dry pressing, cold isostatic pressing, tape casting, extrusion, injection moulding and hot pressing. We also provide mould development, sintering, metallisation, plating, brazing, precision grinding and CNC machining, inspection and engineering support, taking projects from design-for-manufacture and prototyping through to volume production.

What is the state of the markets in which you are currently active?

J.X: We are particularly active in the energy-storage and electric-vehicle markets, where our products support applications such as relays, contactors, sensors, fuses and battery sealing systems. These markets remain active and technically demanding. Customers require excellent electrical insulation, heat resistance, sealing performance, dimensional stability and consistent quality at scale.

As projects progress from product development to mass production, customers also expect responsive engineering support and dependable process control. These are key strengths of our vertically integrated manufacturing model.

What market trends are you seeing?

J.X: We see the advanced ceramics market moving towards higher-performance materials, tighter tolerances and more application-specific designs. The semiconductor industry is creating increasing demand for thin, flat and precisely machined components, while electric-vehicle and energy-storage customers increasingly prefer integrated ceramic-to-metal assemblies rather than sourcing separate parts from multiple suppliers.

Shorter development cycles, traceability and close technical cooperation are also becoming more important. Customers are no longer looking only for a standard ceramic part; they want a manufacturing partner that can help optimise the complete solution.

What are the most innovative products or services that you market?

J.X: One of our most innovative solutions is the metallised ceramic sealing-ring assembly for advanced battery systems. It combines a precision ceramic sealing ring, metallisation and metal terminals in a complete, ready-to-integrate component. The product must deliver electrical insulation, dimensional precision and dependable sealing performance under demanding operating conditions.

Because Meicheng can manage ceramic manufacturing, metallisation, metal-part production, plating, brazing and final inspection within one integrated process, we can offer customers a true one-stop solution for advanced battery applications.

What are your expectations for the second half of 2026?

J.X: We expect the second half of 2026 to be an important period of expansion in the UK and European markets. Our UK office has built a meaningful network across both regions, giving us a stronger foundation for local customer support and new project development.

At the same time, our newly opened dedicated machining department has increased our ability to support customised, high-precision components. Following the successful development and testing of our aluminium nitride and silicon nitride plates, we are ready to introduce these advanced solutions to more semiconductor, new-energy and industrial customers.

Our focus will be on converting development projects into long-term production partnerships, providing faster regional support and strengthening Meicheng’s presence across the UK and Europe.
