Cosinuss is a certified medical device manufacturer based in Munich that specializes in mobile and ultralight patient monitoring solutions. With more than 15 years of research and development, numerous patents and medically certified products, cosinuss° is a pioneer and hidden champion in the field of mobile in-ear patient monitoring. cosinuss° pursues the vision of filling the white spaces in patient monitoring and enabling access to vital signs in situations where it is not possible or not done today – with the aim of improving the treatment and thus the lives of patients and providing the tools to make healthcare more efficient and effective.
Interview with Greta Kreuzer, CEO at Cosinuss GmbH.
What are the main areas of activity of the company?
Greta Kreuzer: The main areas of activity currently include applications of mobile patient monitoring in challenging environments. Thinking of applications where there is spatial narrowness, with difficult access to the patient, at remote places, or where cold & weather have a big influence so that e.g. fingerpulsoxymeter don’t work anymore. These situations typically prevail in the wilderness, outside of clinical settings. However, cosinuss° is also present in the field of remote patient monitoring and already concluded several remote monitoring projects with e.g. high-risk COVID-19 and oncology patients.
What’s the news about new products/services?
G.K: One of the innovative features of our solution is the ability to continuously measure three vital parameters, namely oxygen saturation, body temperature and heart rate with just one device, without cables and with little effort. This is partly due to the measuring place, which is the outer ear canal where you can find optimal conditions for these measurements.
Coming up shortly is a software update which will allow existing devices to additionally monitor blood pressure and respiration rate. We can already access all data points needed for these parameters and can provide these two additional vital signs via a software update after the certification process is finalized.
Also, we released a new app as medical product this fall: The cosinuss° Health App can be used to visualize, document and export the values recorded and sent by the c-med° alpha. Both historical and current values are represented as a curve or as a numerical number. Additionally, this app offers a live plethysmogram to visualize the pulse curve.
What are the ranges of products/services?
G.K: cosinuss° provides a comprehensive suite of products and services that enable mobile & remote patient monitoring, data-driven decision-making, and improved healthcare outcomes. The solutions can be utilized for mobile monitoring or remote patient monitoring. Key products that are part of these offerings are:
- c-med° alpha in-ear multiparameter sensor for data acquisition in the ear canal. They are comfortable to wear and easy to use.
- cosinuss° Health application for mobile devices to collect, visualize, store and easily export patient data.
- cosinuss° Health Web software to oversee relevant vital data from multiple patients on one screen. Access is possible from anywhere by multiple users with different user roles.
Optionally, Gateway devices for highest stability of data transmission from patients’ homes or other stationary monitoring facilities.
Also, cosinuss° can tailor its solutions to meet the specific needs of individual healthcare providers or organizations.
What is the state of the market where you are currently active?
G.K: In challenging situations and environments, there is currently no solution as comprehensive as ours. This is particularly true in areas where, due to poor weather conditions, high altitudes or depths, rough terrain, or remote, conventional patient monitors are disadvantageous or even impossible to take with you.
With the war in Ukraine, this market gets recently more significance. Hurt soldiers and civilians cannot be brought timely to a medical facility, so that the so-called prolonged field care is gaining much higher importance. Patients need to be treated for longer times at a remote location and for that small & lightweight solutions are needed.
Another field that is sadly getting more importance are mass incidents where multiple patients need to be assessed and treated simultaneously. A small & cost-efficient patient monitoring technology is a huge support in managing such situations.
Generally, more and more solutions in various situations are needed to be able to help and treat patients outside of hospitals.
What can you tell us about market trends?
G.K: Generally, this market as well as many others, is seeing a digitalization trend. Manually filled in protocols and documents are going to be replaced by smartphone applications and other digital products. Telemedical solutions will be a standard part of the used procedures. More and more robots and autonomously working solutions will help in recovering patients from challenging environments. And for all of these developments and trends, feedback from the patient and thus patient monitoring is and will stay essential.
What are the most innovative products/services marketed?
G.K: As mentioned before, our mobile & ultralight patient monitoring solution is currently enabling patient monitoring in situations where there was none possible before. Thus, patients can be treated in the best possible way and data driven decisions can be made. Their data can be visualized but also transmitted to a remote physician or another digital solution utilized to help the patients.
What estimations do you have for the rest of 2024?
G.K: For the rest of 2024 we are planning to demonstrate our solutions at numerous more conferences and trade fairs in order to reach the people who are set to help patients in challenging situations. We are very much looking forward to exchange ideas with all market participants to improve the way of helping people even more.
