Interview with Xavier Wilkie, Deputy General Manager – Sales & Marketing at CHEREAU.

What are the main areas of activity of the company?

Xavier Wilkie: CHEREAU’s core activities include the design, manufacture and support of refrigerated truck bodies and semi-trailers. The company serves a wide range of transport applications, from long-haul distribution to urban deliveries, offering both mono-temperature and multi-temperature solutions. CHEREAU is particularly renowned for its bespoke products, which offer cutting-edge performance and high-quality craftsmanship, ensuring outstanding durability and a long service life.

What’s the news about new products/services?

X.W: Over the past two years, CHEREAU has accelerated the deployment of innovative solutions supporting both operational performance and sustainability.

One of the most significant developments is the expansion of the Forever Young program, which helps customers extend the life of their vehicles through refurbishment, modernization and retrofit solutions. The company is also deploying enhanced connectivity solutions through its SmarTrailer platform, providing fleet operators with improved visibility and operational data. In parallel, CHEREAU continues to develop new equipment aimed at improving energy efficiency, safety and ease of operation, as demonstrated by the CHEREAU Concept Trailer, unveiled at Solutrans 2025, where it received the prestigious Joseph Libner Award for environmental innovation.

What are the ranges of products/services?

X.W: CHEREAU offers a comprehensive range of refrigerated transport solutions:

  • Refrigerated semi-trailers for a wide range of applications, including pharmaceutical logistics and meat transport
  • Multi-temperature truck bodies and semi-trailers
  • Rail-road HuckePack semi-trailers
  • Urban distribution solutions such as the CityTrailer®
  • Custom-built vehicles for specific transport applications
  • The company also provides a wide range of services, including:
  • Maintenance and after-sales support
  • Spare parts services
  • Telematics and connected fleet solutions with idem telematics
  • Technical consulting and vehicle customization

CHEREAU’s approach is based on delivering highly customized solutions tailored to each customer’s operational requirements.

What is the state of the market where you are currently active?

X.W: The refrigerated transport sector remains strategically important because it serves essential industries such as food distribution and healthcare logistics. However, the market is currently operating in a more challenging economic environment than in previous years.

Transport operators continue to face pressure from operating costs, while investment decisions are often made with increased caution. At the same time, regulatory requirements and customer expectations regarding sustainability, energy efficiency and fleet productivity continue to rise. In this context, demand remains focused on durable, reliable and efficient transport solutions capable of delivering long-term value.

What can you tell us about market trends?

X.W: Several major trends are shaping the future of refrigerated transport.

The first is the ongoing decarbonization of logistics operations. Fleet operators are actively seeking solutions that reduce energy consumption and emissions while maintaining operational performance.

The second trend is digitalization. Connectivity and data-driven fleet management are becoming increasingly important, allowing operators to optimize vehicle utilization, maintenance and energy performance.

A third trend is the growing focus on asset longevity and circularity. Customers are increasingly looking for ways to maximize the lifespan of their equipment and optimize total cost of ownership rather than focusing solely on acquisition costs.

Finally, safety and driver comfort continue to gain importance as transport companies seek to improve working conditions and operational reliability.

What are the most innovative products/services marketed?

X.W: Innovation has always been at the heart of CHEREAU’s strategy. Today, one of our most significant developments is the CHEREAU Concept Trailer, which provides a vision of the refrigerated trailer of tomorrow.

This concept combines several breakthrough technologies designed to support the decarbonization of temperature-controlled transport. It integrates high-performance VIP (Vacuum Insulated Panel) insulation, which significantly improves thermal efficiency while reducing energy consumption. The vehicle also features an advanced aerodynamic design that helps reduce tractor fuel consumption and improve overall transport efficiency.

The Concept Trailer has been designed to maximize performance under the new VECTO Trailer framework, enabling transport operators to better measure and optimize the environmental performance of their fleets. It is also designed to support the progressive electrification of refrigerated transport, through compatibility with emerging electric refrigeration and energy management technologies.

The Concept Trailer illustrates CHEREAU’s conviction that the future of refrigerated transport will combine aerodynamics, thermal performance, connectivity and electrification.

What estimations do you have for the second half of 2026?

X.W: Market visibility remains limited, and the economic environment continues to require caution. Nevertheless, several structural factors support confidence in the medium and long term.

The transportation of food and healthcare products remains essential, while fleet renewal and modernization needs continue across Europe. Demand for more efficient, connected and sustainable transport solutions is expected to grow further as operators seek to improve both environmental and economic performance.

For the second half of 2026, CHEREAU expects market conditions to remain demanding but believes that innovation, customer proximity and the ability to deliver high-value, tailor-made solutions will continue to be key differentiators. The company will maintain its focus on supporting customers through the transformation of refrigerated transport while pursuing its long-term strategy of performance, durability and sustainability.

The continued development and testing of electric refrigerated trailer solutions will play a key role in shaping the next generation of temperature-controlled transport.
