H2 POWERCELL H2POWERCUBE: CLEANTECH CONFERENCE 2026

A critical hurdle in expanding off-grid microgrids and decarbonizing energy-intensive facilities like data centers is bridging the gap between short-term battery buffer storage and seasonal long-term energy density. Traditional renewable systems often rely on fossil-fuel backup generators when solar and wind generation drop below base-load requirements. By combining a PEM electrolyzer (H2PowerLyzer), physical hydrogen storage, a fuel cell, and a battery storage system into a single containerized unit (H2PowerCube), industrial sites can run fully resilient, zero-emission microgrids. Supported by Germany’s Export Initiative Environmental Protection (EXI), Emsdetten-based H2 POWERCELL GmbH demonstrated this system to German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider at the CleanTech Conference 2026 in Berlin, highlighting active deployments supplying 100% renewable power to the island of Koh Phaluai in Thailand and a data center energy habitat in Chile.

Germany’s environmental industry is one of the country’s most important industries of the future and makes a significant contribution to value creation. With key technologies such as climate-neutral and decentralized energy generation, “GreenTech made in Germany” is strongly anchored in foreign trade and in global innovation competition. Since 2016, the “Export Initiative Environmental Protection” (EXI) funding program of the “Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety” (BMUKN) has been supporting German companies in positioning environmental technologies and sustainable solutions. As a platform and transfer office, it brings together stakeholders from business, politics and international markets. To mark EXI’s tenth anniversary, the “CleanTech Conference 2026” took place in Berlin at the beginning of September, to which the Emsdetten-based company “H2 POWERCELL GmbH” (www.h2-powercell.de) was invited. Founded in 2020, the hydrogen expert for stationary decarbonization specializes in the development, manufacture and sale of emission-free hydrogen-based all-in-one solutions for energy storage and supply. 

Energy Solutions for Islands, Industry, Data Centers, Security of Supply and Mobility 

As part of an EXI funding program, hydrogen grids from H2 POWERCELL are being planned for the decentralized renewable energy supply on a Thai island and for a data center in Chile. In both cases, the containerized “H2PowerCube” power plant is used. At the CleanTech Conference, the German Federal Minister for the Environment, Mr. Carsten Schneider, together with the Managing Director of the “German Chamber of Industry and Commerce” (DIHK), Ms. Dr. Helena Melnikov, informed himself about the current project status and in particular about the GreenTech innovation of H2 POWERCELL. 

“The H2PowerCube, based on renewable resources, is used wherever energy infrastructure needs to become more resilient, excess renewable energy must not be lost, or the mobility transition is reaching the limits of the existing power grids. In this way, complete energy solutions can be created from individual technologies – for islands, industry, data centres or for security of supply in the defence sector as well as for the mobility of the future.” – Sebastian Niehoff, Managing Partner of H2 POWERCELL, explained the possibilities of the application with co-partner Ruediger Schuma and Jens Froehlich (Head of Electrical Engineering & Software Engineering).

In addition, it is fundamentally conceivable that geopolitical or geodynamic scenarios will make resilient grids necessary for civil protection, disaster protection and civil protection, while at the same time establishing environmentally conscious climate protection measures to achieve the energy transition.

“Green H2Islands Project” on Koh Phaluai and Energy Habitat for Data Center in Chile 

The goal of the “Green H2Islands Project” in Thailand is to gradually supply the island of Koh Phaluai with renewable “green” energy less dependent on diesel generators. Renewable electricity can not only be used directly there, but also stored and made available again at a later date. This mechanism of action also plays a decisive role in the realization of an energy habitat in Chile. Here, the H2 PowerCube is intended to contribute to the secure and sustainable energy supply of a data center and thus show how additional fossil gas-fired power plant capacities can be avoided in the future. 

Intelligent H2PowerCube overall system creates Resilient Energy Infrastructure 

The H2PowerCube, as a premium product from H2 POWERCELL, combines electrolyzer, hydrogen storage, fuel cell and battery storage to form an intelligent overall system. Surplus renewable electricity is first stored in the battery or converted into hydrogen with the help of the electrolyser. The hydrogen produced can be stored for a long time and, if necessary, reused for electricity and energy supply via the fuel cell. In this way, the H2PowerCube combines short-term battery storage with long-term hydrogen storage – especially large amounts of energy – and creates a local, resilient energy infrastructure.
